373 arrested for attacks on temples in AP

As many as 373 persons were arrested so far in connection with attacks on temples in Andhra Pradesh, Director General of Police Gautham Sawang disclosed here on Wednesday.Addressing a review meeting with executive officers of the temples and higher officials of the Endowment department, he also revealed that police also inquired 4,875 persons who were involved in attacks on temples in the past.So far, 47,734 CC cameras were set up in temples while 59,443 temples were surveyed and geo-tagged. Besides, village protection committees were proposed to set up for 23,832 temples, he said.There was a need to improve security standards in the wake of recent attacks on temples, he said and noted that temples formed the basis for rich culture and traditions. There were several ancient temples of great historical importance in Andhra Pradesh, he pointed out.Sawang said that the disappearance of silver lions at Durga temple in the city gave rise to a lot of criticism and allegations but thanks to the merciful Goddess Durga, the culprit was brought to book.Similarly, the burning of a chariot at Antarvedi temple also changed the atmosphere, he felt.
